When I hear people say that they keep doing lower ab exercise but they are not happy with the results they are getting I really have to wonder what their overall body fat ratio is.
Low Body Fat Overall = Better Defined Abs
If you want sexy abs you will most likely have to get your overall body fat ratio down to 8% – 10%. I am sure you have heard it before but I’ll say it again….your abs especially your lower abs won’t show if they are covered up with a layer of fat.
All Abs Are Not Created Equal
I really don’t know where this obsession over the perfect abs comes from. Actually I do, it is stemmed from all of the marketing that the fitness industry does. What they fail to disclose is that not everybody is predisposed to have a perfectly sculpted sexy six pack. Instead of getting frustrated about trying to achieve something that just might not be genetically possible, try to achieve the best abs that you personally can.
Start to look at people around you at the gym or wherever (don’t stare but observe) and you will discover that bodies come in all shapes and sizes. There is not a one size fits all meaning to the word fit. I would dare to say that even if you attain what most people would consider a really toned body that you will still notice your imperfections. We need to get past this.
Lower Ab Isolation Exercise
I personally don’t care for isolation exercises. This is not to say that I don’t do them on occasion but if given the choice I will opt for an overall body workout anytime. I think that a full body multi-joint workout benefits your body better than focusing in on one muscle or muscle group.
Working your whole body coupled with sound nutrition will help you shed extra pounds that keep your muscles from being seen. Once you are down to a low enough body fat ratio you can target certain muscle groups to further add definition if you want to.
I find that by doing a wide variety of full body workouts that you can keep in shape without falling into a workout rut. This will also keep your muscles guessing what is coming next. What you will find is that it will be easier to stay in shape with less time and effort.
Some Of My Favorite Ab And Workout Resources
I know that there are a lot of resources out there but like information that is straight forward and no nonsense. When it comes to six pack abs I don’t think that there is any better information (at this time anyway) that what Mike Geary has compiled in his book The Truth About Abs. There is so much science backed information in the book that it will make your head spin. It also isn’t just about abs Mike talks about nutrition, common misconceptions about health and a whole slew of other things. If nothing else go and check out his site….there is a boatload of free information on it if you take the time to poke around a bit.
Another of my favorites is Craig Ballantyne’s Turbulence Training book. Again there is so much info on his site that even if you don’t pick up his book you will find something useful that you didn’t know before or just make sure you get his freebies if nothing else. Below is a picture of Craig and his dog. Obviously Craig practices what he teaches….notice how he is toned and not overly bulky…..this is a much nicer look as opposed to the bulked up appearance.
